Jon Venables and Robert Thompson were 10 year old boys who in 1993, committed one of the most heinous crimes in British history.
The two boys abducted two year old James Bulger from a shopping centre in Liverpool and carefully led him away to the train tracks. There, they tortured, sexually assaulted and ultimately killed him. Police found blue paint splattered over him, batteries in his mouth. They also believed some had been inserted into his anus although none were found there. James died from skull fractures and his cadaver was placed on the track as to look like an unfortunate accident.
The most chilling thing about this case is that Jon Venables, Robert Thompson and their victim, James Bulger were seen by a total of 38 people on that day. James had a bump on his head and was distressed but most bystanders did nothing to intervene- At one point, a woman confronted the older boys but Venables would reassure her that he was their younger brother.
Venables and Thompson have now been given new identities and they live unbeknownst to their neighbours, friends, and possibly family.
